PMC (2013) Application of ozone in the treatment of periodontal disease
The paper proves that human cells have a complete combined antioxidant defense system of vitamin C and vitamin E, which can quickly counteract the slight oxidative stress produced by low-concentration ozone. Periodontal and cariogenic bacteria are short of sufficient antioxidant enzymes and antioxidant reserves. Ozone can target and destroy bacterial cell membranes and nucleic acid structures to realize selective sterilization, with almost no damage to healthy oral epithelium and gingival soft tissues.
PMC (2020) Effect of Herbal Water, Ozonated Water, Water, and Chlorhexidine Mouthrinses on Oral Health Status of Children

Cell experiments using human gingival epithelial cell line Ca9-22 proved that ozone ultrafine bubble water with ozone concentrations of 1–5 ppm barely causes cytotoxic damage to gingival epithelial cells after 1 minute or 30 minutes of exposure. In contrast, common disinfectants including povidone iodine and chlorhexidine display severe cytotoxicity, leading to over 99% loss of cell viability under the same treatment conditions.
